The History of Dortmans Bros. Barn Equip. Inc.
Dortmans Bros. originated in Strathroy, Ontario, 1980. The two brothers, John and Adrian started up their new Patz Dealership out of their parents’ garage, using the family's cucumber and babysitting money to buy their first inventory, and the business has grown from a two man operation to hosting 3 locations in Strathroy, Salford, and Jarvis, with a staff of over 35 employees. It's still very much family oriented, with more then 1/3 of the staff being related. The company has grown from working with silo unloaders and manure handling equipment, to sales and service for Dairy, Hog, Poultry and Beef. We boast that we handle all your in-barn needs. Where every sale is backed by service.
The Company started with one supplier line, and as the business grew, so did the different lines of equipment that Dortmans handled. We soon needed to move out of the parent's garage and purchased our first location in Adelaide Village in 1982, where we still host our head office today.
The brothers worked together selling, servicing and installing the equipment, with John focusing on the sales end and Adrian's speciality was service and installing the equipment. In 1986, John's wife Rita came on board to help look after the paperwork, ordering product, invoicing the customers and making sure that the bills were paid. At this point, Adrian had decided to venture into farming, and sold his portion of the business, but still worked part-time within the business.
In the early 1980's we added the Dairy Equipment Company's BouMatic line of milking equipment. So we not only worked with the silos and manure handling, but we became specialists in the milking equipment business as well. With this expansion also came the need to hire staff, so in 1988, John Toonen started with us to help with installations, and brother, Tony Dortmans came on to help in our Dairy Route Sales and Service.
The company continued to strive, with the addition of several more lines for both the Dairy and Hog industries. We added GSI/Cumberland, Exacon, BSM, ValMetal and Jamesway to help us provide feeding and manure handling, ventilation, and stabling to our growing customer base. At this point the hog industry was growing quickly and complete hog barns were going up. With this growth another brother Willy Dortmans came on to help with installation and sales on the hog side in 1992.
As the hog and poultry industries continued to flourish, we found the need to expand into automation of feeding and TMR systems. So Sudenga became a good fit to help our farmers to process their own product to feed their livestock.
In 2000 we expanded our dairy customer base and added a full-time route man, Joe Minten, to our staff. Joe looks after supplying all our soaps, supplies and aftermarket sales to our local dairy farmers. In 2001 Ben Willemse joined our team, heading up our Dairy Division. Ben's focus was on Capital Dairy Sales, looking after sales of dairy equipment. Ben works one on one with our farmers helping them right from the planning stages with barn drawings and product knowledge, making sure that the farmer gets the product that is best suited for their dairy expansion or remodel.
Customer Service is what we pride ourselves with. Our long time staff of employees that have been working within our company for decades. John Toonen, Tony Dortmans, Jeremy Schram, and Brian Verheyen, bring our customer the service they expect, with vast knowledge and experience on all our equipment lines. They are here to help 24/7, with any emergency service calls that may occur. Our Service and Part Department is headed up by Managers, Tim Willemse and Mike Rombouts, who take all our incoming service calls, and coordinate them to make sure that our Service Techs are dispatched on a timely basis. They deal with our walk in customers, to make sure that all our customers are served with staff that knows the product.
Ed Dobinson joined the Dortmans Bros. team in 2009, bringing with him years of experience in the Dairy Industry. Ed handles Dairy Sales from route supplies, to aftermarket supplies, to back barn equipment; specializing in Calf Care and Ventilation.
In March of 2010, Ben and Kim Willemse became partners in our business. With the expansion of this partnership, we purchased the BouMatic line of equipment in the Woodstock and Dunnville areas. With the expansion came experienced staff members, Jim Blewett who looks after routes, Dan Howard and Dan Ovington, who are our key technicians looking after the Woodstock and surrounding areas. Shortly after Jerry VanWyk, came aboard to help head our Salford Office and focus on milking equipment sales and service. This expansion lead to us building at our current location in Salford, were we work alongside of D & R Farms, Inc., with Dallas and Rebecca Vermeersch who help oversee this location, while operating their own lines of barn equipment. Ryan Schuurman, completes our team in the Jarvis area, where he has set up shop at his home, to support and service our Customers in that area.
As we continue to service our dairy customers with scheduled service and maintenance, it came apparent the need to hire a technician with a strong dairy background. Dwight Garrett joined our team in 2011, focusing on milk ability and helping the farmers get the best production out of their herd. Dwight heads up our Schedule Maintenance crew and works closely with Keith Robson to give our customers an annual check up focusing on milk ability, and producing the necessary paperwork to keep our customers CQM certified. Keith also helps our customers with cow comfort, focusing on the back barn equipment.
In the past we focused mainly on the milking of the dairy cow, but the goat market continued to grow, so we expanded into the automation and milking of goats with the installation of several goat rotaries.
In 2012, we grew again, to add the BouMaticRobotics line of robotic milking. With this expansion came on our Robotic Technician Josh Hardy. Josh works along side Ben to help promote robotic milking, and service and install our robotic milking equipment.
As we continue to grow, and service our Customer needs, we are always looking for new and innovative ways to help promote, automate, and service our clientele.
